4/7/19 - Jesus, The Light and The Life

“The Lord is my light and my salvation.  Whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the strength of my life.  Of whom shall I be afraid?”   (Psalms 27:1)

The psalmist David connects the words “light” and “life” in the first lines of this psalm.  He also attributes these things to the Lord.  There is no doubt that the two are closely connected.

In the physical world, light is necessary for life.  The light of our sun provides the energy necessary for plants to grow and produce food to eat and oxygen for us to breathe.  The light is vital for the health of animals as well.  People depend on the energy from the sun for light by which to see, warmth for the earth and our bodies, and many other ways for our good.  (Note: While there are some creatures that live in near total darkness in the ocean depths or in caves, even here energy from the sun is necessary for life.)  Simply put:  no light – no life!

How much more important this is in the spiritual realm.  David said, “The Lord is my light. . . the strength of my life.”  He understood this need and absolute dependence on the Lord for courage to face the wicked (verse 2), sustenance in the house of the Lord (verse 4), and access to His temple to honor Him (verse 4).

Concerning Jesus we read, “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men” (John 1:4).

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).  To have light – to have life – we must come to Jesus.  It is not enough to be “spiritual” or to be “religious.”  The only way to light and life is through the person of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who shed His blood on the cross to atone for our sins and rose from the dead to justify us before God.  There is no other light in the world.  All claims to light and life are powerless.  There is no light and life except Jesus.

The Lord also said, “And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.  For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.  But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God” (John 3:19-21).  The truth for living well in this world and the truth to have life eternal is only found in Jesus.  The world says that there is no life after this world and that the deeds of this world bring happiness.  This is darkness and not the truth.  People who live in darkness don’t want to hear the truth because they do not want their wicked works exposed.  There is coming a judgment day, and that’s the truth.

Jesus is the light and the life.  He is the Lord of salvation, who gives us strength, and displaces our fear with hope in Him.  Let His light of truth shine in your life.  Hear His words.  Follow His commands.  Have the life that He offers you now and forever.
